Julius Hense j.hense@tu-berlin.de

  • Registration: Claim one of the available slots below (colored in green): double-click and replace the "<#...>" with your information. Alternatively, feel free to reach out to Julius.

  • Title & Abstract: You will be asked to provide a title and an abstract a few days before your time slot. We use this to announce your session via talk@ml.tu-berlin.de to generate high attendance.

  • Time Limits: We usually offer two slots per session. Per default, a speaker gets a total of 30 minutes for talk and discussion. The time limit will be enforced, and using a timer is encouraged. If you'd like more (or less) time, no problem at all, but please let us know in advance.

  • Session Chair: You can also register as a chairperson, e.g., if the speaker is your student or a collaborator, or if you just want to gain experience in hosting talks.

  • Recordings: We typically do not record our sessions, so that we can share unpublished results and have open discussions. However, we can offer recordings to the speaker upon request.

  • Questions: If you have questions about the seminar, please feel free to contact Julius (see above).

Inspiration

The PhD Seminar is an open platform of exchange about ML research. A session can be about pretty much anything: an ongoing project, a new idea, a hands-on skill-sharing session, a thesis defense, an external speaker sharing a recent paper, a job talk, or something completely different. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Here is some inspiration:

  • The Classic: Give a 15-20-minute talk about an ongoing or completed research project, followed by a 15-10-minute discussion (30 minutes in total). You get the chance to update the group about your work, practice your communication skills, and get input regarding future directions and collaborations from your colleagues.

  • The Project Pitch: You have a project idea and are looking for collaborators? Or do you just want to validate if it makes sense at all? Why not pitch your idea to the group with a few slides (5-10 minutes) to initiate an extensive discussion (~15-20 minutes)? Little effort, great outcome (possibly).

  • The Hands-on Tutorial: You have acquired a skill you would like to share with the others? You would like to transform the individual skills of various group members into collective knowledge? Get them together by organizing a tutorial. This could include a longer programming session (30-45 minutes) where you work through practical examples, or short presentations of multiple speakers about specific skills. Surely everybody will be grateful to learn something new, while you enable people to work more effectively and maybe even support you with your projects.

  • The External: There’s someone you always wanted to hear talk about their topic? Do you have an external collaborator you’d like to give a stage? Feel free to invite them to give a talk to our group.

  • The Creative: Do you have an idea for a different, experimental format? Just reach out; we’ll most probably be able to host you.
