''Fast response BCI'' Abstract: To be in full control of a Brain Computer Interface not only the classification accuracy is of importance, but also the speed of response and exact timing. In the present study we try to see how fast someone can respond to a stimulus using motor imagery, if this speed can be increased by training and if so, what strategies and changes in the brain signals are responsible for the increased speed. The experimental paradigm simulates a penalty shot situation. The stimulus consists of a ball that moves in a straight line from the top of the screen down to the bottom left or the bottom right corner. This ball needs to be caught by a bar which is controlled by motor imagery and moves at once when the output of the classifier reaches a certain threshold. The time the ball takes to travel from the top to the bottom of the screen linearly decreases, thus putting higher temporal pressure on the subject. If the reaction speed of the subject does increase possible causes could be a quicker or larger desynchronisation, an enlarged cortical area showing a desynchronization, recruitment of other area's active synchronisation of the ipsilateral side, and/or a shift in frequency of the signal. In a pilot study eight subjects were tested. Based on the data analysis of this initial experiment, a number of improvements of the paradigm could be made for the follow-up experimental main series. The data of the eight subjects will be presented as well as the old and new version of the experiment. |
