Structure of the Seminar

This seminar can be seen as a conference session. A chairman leads through the seminar and the audience can change between the contributions. We have two roles:

Speaker:

  • chooses a type of contribution (default is 10/10-talk)
  • provides title, abstract and type of contribution (if not default) to chairman
  • presents in English

Types of Contribution:

  • 20/10-talk: 20 minutes talk about current research followed by 10 minutes discussion & feedback

  • Think Tank: Pure discussion (< 30 min ) about a future research idea or a problem the speaker stumbled upon that needs to be solved

  • Tutorial: An in-depth talk (< 45 min) about the speaker's current research or an introduction to a hot topic being new to the group

Chairman:

  • Sends an email to the speakers and asks for the titles and abstracts some days in advance
  • invites ML group to the seminar via email (talk@ml.tu-berlin.de)

  • introduces speaker
  • has an eye on the time

Other Talks

  • Bachelor and Master defenses can be part of the seminar, which usually take 20 minutes talk and 10 minutes discussion.
  • There will also be invited speakers which are free to choose content, length and form of presentation.

Goals of the seminar

  • Train giving and preparing talks
  • Get feedback about own research
  • Gain new ideas for further projects
  • Get an impression of what's going on at IDA and beyond
  • Improve English skills
