== FAQ ==
 * I found my name on the schedule but I can't make it on that day to TU / can't give the talk for any other reason.
   Ask around and swap your spot with another speaker. Then incorporate the change in the wiki. This way the seminar chair knows who to invite. If it is not possible to find someone to swap, you might be able to move your talk to the end of the semester (there should be a couple of free slots). There is no need to send an email to the PhD seminar organizer.

 * I just got an e-mail from the seminar chair asking for my talk abstract and would like to postpone my talk to sometime later in the semester.
   Last minute cancellations are difficult. If you can find someone to swap your spot with, please incorporate the changes in the wiki and ask the new speaker to submit his abstract to the PhD seminar chair. If you can not find someone to swap with, you might be able to move your talk to the end of the semester. Please note that this behavior is highly discouraged. In case you want to go down this road, please notify the seminar chair and keep in mind that some form of compensation (cake, cookies, ...) is expected. There is no need to send an email to the PhD seminar organizer.

 * Can I go to only one talk in a Research Ideas session?
   Yes. You are welcome to go or enter between the talks.

 * Further questions?
   You have got further questions or ideas concerning the seminar? Please let me know: felix.brockherde@tu-berlin.de

Structure of Talks

Research Ideas

This seminar can be seen as a conference session. A chairman leads through the seminar and the audience can change between the talks (20 minutes each). We have two roles:

Speaker:

  • provides title and abstract (2 sentences) to chairman
  • 10 minute talk in English
  • introduces a recent research idea or some small part of his work
  • alternatively a paper presentation is welcome too
  • after the talk there should be room for discussion & feedback (about 10 minutes)

Chairman:

  • Sends an email to the speakers and asks for the titles and abstracts some days in advance
  • invites ML group to the seminar via email (talk@ml.tu-berlin.de)

  • introduces speaker
  • has an eye on the time (10 minutes talk / 10 minutes discussion / 10 minutes talk / ...)

Other Talks

There are also other talks like tutorials, conference reports or invited speakers. Speakers are free to choose content and form of presentation. These talks can be longer.

Goals of the seminar

  • Train giving and preparing talks
  • Get feedback about own research
  • Gain new Ideas for further projects
  • Get an impression of what's going on at IDA and beyond
  • Improve English skills
