  • Can I go to only one talk in a Research Ideas session?
    • Yes. You are welcome to go or enter between the talks.
  • What is mandatory for whom?
    • Project Talks are mandatory for all PhD students. If you are a PhD student and you can't make it to a project talk, please let Klaus know via email.


Goals of the seminar

  • Train giving and preparing talks
  • Get feedback about own research
  • Gain new Ideas for further projects
  • Get an impression of what's going on at Ida and beyond
  • Improve English skills


Structure of Talks

1. Research Ideas

This kind of seminar can be seen as a conference session. A chairman leads through the seminar and the audience can change between the talks (20 minutes each).

Speaker:

  • emails title and abstract (2 sentences) to chairman
  • 10 minute talk in English
  • introduces a recent research idea or some small part of his work
  • alternatively a paper presentation is welcome too
  • after the talk there is room for discussion & feedback (about 10 minutes)

Chairman:

  • collect the titles and abstracts of each speaker
  • invites ML group to the seminar via email (ida@ml.cs.tu-berlin.de)

  • introduces speaker
  • has an eye on the time (10 minutes talk / 10 minutes discussion / 10 minutes talk / ...)

2. Project Talk

Speaker / Chairman: You have got between 0.5 -1 hour to present together your research project. Your talk should answer the following questions:

  • What are the main goals of your project?
  • Who is involved?
  • What are you doing in this project?
  • Where is machine learning involved?

This talk is mandatory for all PhD students.

3. Other Talks

There are also other talks like tutorials or conference reports. Speakers are free to choose content and form of presentation. They do not need to care about invitation via email.
